What Is Levaquin?

The generic name of Levaquin is levofloxacin. It is a broad spectrum antibiotic of the flouroqinolone class. Being a broad spectrum antibiotic it can effectively work against a wide range of different species of bacterial pathogenic organisms.

Its first patent was acquired by the European pharmaceutical company: Daiichi Pharmaceutical ltd in the year 1987. Levofloxacin received the approval of United States FDA on December 20th, 1996. Initially the approval was for the treatment of conditions like: bacterial sinusitis, community-acquired pneumonia, infections of the skin, urinary tract infections, bronchitis and acute pyelonephritis.

Currently its patent in the United States is held by: McNeil-Janssen.

In the year 2007 it was found to be the most prescribed drug compared to other drugs of the flouroquinolone class.

How Is This Drug Used?

Levofloxacin can be administered in the form of tablets, oral solution, injections and can also be used in the form of eye or ear drops.

The tablets can be taken orally in doses of 250 mg to 750 mg daily, or depending on the severity of infection.

Levaquin can also be given through injection and the dose is 250 mg / 500 mg administered through slow infusion for 60 minutes after every 24 hours or 750 mg given over 90 minutes every 24 hours, or depending upon the severity of infection.

The patient should have a creatinine clearance of more than or equal to 50 mL/min. In patients with lower creatinine clearance rates than this, dosing regimen will have to be altered.
